The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has used a new report on air quality to make the claim that new Euro 6 standards have ‘the potential to all-but eliminate’ exhaust pollutants.

The report outlines new developments in diesel technology, and discusses how these developments have contributed to reduced nitrous oxide emissions.

As of September 2015, all new petrol and diesel cars are required to comply with new Euro 6 emission standards. These standards aim to make cars cleaner; encouraging lower levels of harmful car and van exhaust emissions such nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons such as THC and NMHC. By reducing these emissions, vehicles get better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.

The report comes as new car registrations increased by 9.6% increase year on year in August. Of the 79,000 new vehicles registered in August 2015, 301 were pure electric cars, whilst 879 were eligible for the Plug-In Car Grant.

17,080 plug-in cars have been registered in the UK so far this year; a 200% increase from the first 9 months of 2014.
