A hybrid car combines a conventional petrol or diesel engine with an electric motor. The motor’s battery is charged by capturing energy used by the engine. At low speeds, the car goes along using the electric power but the petrol engine will take over when the batteries are low or need more power, for example driving at higher speeds.
Hybrids are becoming more and more popular because they consume less fuel and emit less CO2 compared to a petrol or diesel vehicle whilst offering good performance. Hybrids are perhaps being used as a stepping stone to the eventual switch to a fully electric vehicle.
A plug-in hybrid is the same as above but it can be ‘plugged in'. This means that the electric motor’s batteries can be by an electric outlet such as a charging point. This means that plug-in hybrids can travel much further under electric power than regular hybrids, although not as far as fully-electric vehicles.
As well as electric vehicles, Green Motion is pleased to offer a range of hybrid vehicles that are available from a selection of our UK branches. Here is a run-down of some of the hybrid vehicles we offer:
You might have seen the BMW i3 advertised as a fully electric car and that’s right. The i3 is available as a full electric car but also as a range extender hybrid which offers drivers added range and versatility. The range extender provides a no different drive to the BMW i3 and offers a 186 mile range.
Toyota is an old hand when it comes to hybrids. The manufacturer is the true hybrid pioneer and this, the Toyota Prius, is the world’s best-selling hybrid car. And it’s easy to see why. Reliable and fuel efficient, the car allows drivers to travel for short distances in full-electric mode and longer distances with a seamlessly powered engine and motor. Ideal for family use, the Prius has as much space inside as a family hatchback.
The Auris is one of only a few hybrids in the compact hatchback class. Perhaps often overshadowed by its sibling, the Prius, the Auris certainly packs its own punch. For drivers looking for a no-nonsense approach to their motoring, the Auris provides an efficient option.
The Toyota Yaris Hybrid is a striking sporty style car to look at. But just like the Prius and the Auris, the racy appearance is home to a compact, practical and reliable hatchback that will get you from A to B in style. This is a small hatchback that is perfectly suited to city driving.
