The official hometown of Santa Claus, Rovaniemi is for life, not just for Christmas! We recommend visiting the Arktikum while you’re in town, home to the Arctic Centre and the Provincial Museum of Lapland. There are also some fantastic nature trails and hikes that you can take, just a half hour outside of Rovaniemi. The town is beautiful all year round, and in the summer you really get to appreciate the stunning nature right on your doorstep. If you’re feeling brave, you could also take a dip in the Ounasjoki River!
Before you rent
Choose wisely. In 2019 we introduced our multi-product system which helps you choose a car based on your needs and easily see the final price. Car rental insurance can be tricky to navigate and often isn't what you expect, by booking with us direct you'll receive the correct insurance for your rental.
When you collect your vehicle
Plan ahead. We recommend planning your route before you leave, especially when renting a car at an airport. Are you sure where you're meeting your chaperone or where the rental desk is? Your confirmation email will have the contact information for the location, so we suggest saving the number in your phone ahead of time.
Have the correct documents ready. We try and keep the check in process as painless as possible but we do need to process certain information for legal reasons so having these ready ahead of time can help speed up the process. Make sure you have your booking details ready, along with your driving licence, passport and valid credit card.
Complete a vehicle check. It's essential when you are taken to your car you complete a Vehicle Condition Report (VCR) and note any existing damage, paying particular attention to the five damage hotspots. If you don't report this, you may be liable for these damages when you return the vehicle. We don't want you to get caught out, so we've put together a handy vehicle inspection video to help you check everything thoroughly.
While you rent
Take care. Unfortunately you may be liable for any damage caused to a vehicle in your care, and this will vary depending on the product you choose. A large proportion of damages to any car can be dings you pick up in car parks, so be mindful when space is limited and park further away and walk a little further to your destination.
When you return your vehicle
Complete a vehicle check. It's time to carry out a VCR again and even more essential to fully log any damage, no matter how small, to ensure you are fully covered and we can process your return effectively. Be sure to check the vehicle as before, paying special attention to the five damage hotspots.

In Finland, driving is on the right-hand side. A valid driving license from your home country is required, and depending on your country of origin, you may also need an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Speed limits in Lapland are generally lower than in southern Finland due to weather conditions and wildlife. Stick to the speed limits, which are usually 50 km/h in towns, bon secondary roads, and up to 120 km/h on highways in summer (though lower in winter).
There are speed cameras on many major roads, even in rural areas, and fines for speeding can be hefty.
From November 1 to March 31, winter tires are mandatory, especially in Rovaniemi where winters are snowy, and roads can be icy. By law, vehicles must carry a reflective safety vest and a warning triangle, which should be used in case of breakdowns or accidents. Don't worry – if you rent from us, we provide everything you need!
Reindeer crossings are common, especially in rural areas and forests. These animals often wander near or across roads and are not scared of cars – so always stay alert, especially in the early morning or evening hours. In the winter months, they can be harder to see due to low light. Signs for reindeer are posted along roads, but they can appear in areas without signs, so reduce your speed and be cautious.
From late autumn to early spring, snow and ice can make roads slippery, especially outside urban areas. Always drive cautiously and be prepared for changing weather conditions.
Roads are plowed regularly, but during or immediately after snowstorms, they can become slippery or covered with snow, especially in rural or remote areas. Roads might be narrower due to snow buildup on the sides.
During the polar night (known as "kaamos"), Rovaniemi and Lapland experience very limited daylight, with only a few hours of twilight or no sun at all in the northernmost parts. Driving in low light conditions is common, so ensure your vehicle’s lights are functioning well and use your headlights at all times.
On the flip side, during the summer months, you may experience 24 hours of daylight (midnight sun), which can be disorienting when driving late at night.
As you drive further north, fuel stations, restaurants, and services become much scarcer. Always fill up your tank before setting out on long trips, especially in remote areas where stations may be far apart or closed during late hours.
Finland does not have toll roads, so you can explore freely, including driving from Rovaniemi to places like the Arctic Circle, Levi, or even further into Lapland without worrying about toll fees.
If you need any assistance during your stay in Finland, feel free to contact us. For emergencies, dial 112 for all emergency services.
