For those driving in Muscat for the first time, take a moment to familiarize yourself with local traffic rules and plan your routes using Google Maps or Waze.
In Oman, driving is on the right-hand side. A valid driver’s license from your home country is required, and depending on your country of origin, an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be necessary. Your rental car will be equipped with required safety items, such as a warning triangle and reflective vest.
Muscat’s road network is modern and well-maintained, but be cautious of fast drivers on highways. Traffic can be heavy during rush hours (7-9 AM & 4-7 PM). Speed Limits in Oman are 60 km/h in urban areas, 90-100 km/h on rural roads, and 120 km/h on highways (strictly enforced with speed cameras).
Parking is generally easy, with free parking available at most hotels, shopping malls, and tourist sites. However, finding parking near the Muttrah Souq can be difficult during peak hours. Fuel stations are widely available, and petrol is affordable, making road trips cost-effective.
